BLENDED
DEDICATED TO: YEAR 2006

India the ever growing economy has witnessed some great achievements and Déjàvu in the eventful year of 2006.Be it the revival of congress as the killer of Gandhiism. Or the floods in Mumbai or the satisfying judgement for cases of Jessica Lal, Priyadarshini Mattoo and Nitish Kalra. The people of India found their voice in form of Citizen Activism, while the netizens of the country found a channel of expressions on the Blogs and on Orkut. The economy had many impediments but it advanced at an astonishing rate, it almost seemed that Gods the U.N. and the people of India all had a common goal.It was a year of blunders be it antics of Jaylalithha and Mulayam Singh, the false promises of Congress or the refusal to dismantle the French aircraft carrier, Clemenceau at Alanga, Gujrat. Many mixed feelings were generated, for example the Ratan Tata’s big dream for the small car. The fierce retaliation towards the former by Mamta Banerji in way of a hunger strike, against the government acquiring almost 1000 acres of agricultural land for Tata motors to set up their car production plant; to the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya’s new found interest in marketing, the whole thing found the state of West Bengal torn two ways. Or be it the case ‘Nuclear Friendship’ of India and the U.S., the moment to savour turned sour, and India is more a pariah than a survivor in the weapons scenario. It will be frustrate to say anything against the oxymoron of the preacher of Gandhigiri, Sanjay Dutt aka Munna Bhai being arrested for possession of ammunition.India got a facelift (no less impressive than those of Amitabh Bacchan), when our Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance Of Loss inherited a Booker Prize and the 9.2 pc increase in the GDP called for a celebration from all states.A year of violence -revisited by Mumbai in the form of the train blasts, by the government who finally understood the power of today’s youth as they protested against the reservation of seats, by the Police of Delhi as they saw the self-centered urban businessmen unite against abolition of the shops. This blended year saw India form liaisons with China, U.S. and its own citizens, saw the industrialists like Laxmi Mittal, N.R.. Narayana and Mahindra prepared against the global competition and as the industries boomed the poverty line descended by 12% as compared to the last year. The woman-of-fire Indra Nooyi made India proud as the newly elected president of PepsiCo!The often asked question of what could be more annoying than the Saas-bahu soaps got answered by the flood of reality-shows now being shown on air.A year of failures, a year of hope, of prodigal sons and promising protégés, of the sport stars and the underground star (Prince), of media babies and match breakers (D. Hair), of killing couture and kiss-and-tell scandals, a spicy year that sure left bitter-sweet memories for all. And as I end all I have to ‘Sallam India you are truly Incredible!’
